Grants
2016
The BRRAlliance Inc and the Scajaquada Corridor Coalition Design Committee have come together to address the need of envisioning the western most end of the Scajaquada and Black Rock Harbor. We requested and received $5,000 in funding from the Baird Foundation as the primary grantor as time is of the essence in this project and the Baird Foundation has a long history of community support.
The Department of Transportation is moving forward on downgrading and revising the portion of the 198 from Parkside to Elmwood. The section from Elmwood to Niagara is not currently included. We see this as a vital project for the future economic growth of our communities.
The project resulted in a white paper and presentation for alternative visions for the Western Scajaquada. Both the position paper and the presentations and renderings are available on our website.
The West Side Youth Development Coalition (WSYDC), coordinated by the Center for Health and Social Research Center at Buffalo State College, is dedicated to improving the lives of youth living on the west side of Buffalo from downtown to the Kenmore line.
Via a Department of Justice Drug Free Communities Grant, the mission of the WSYDC is to improve the environment; provide education on avoiding risky behavior, drugs and alcohol; and promote and encourage positive activities for youth. Since 2015 the WSYDC has provided grants for the Black Rock Museum to hold their annual History in Your Backyard essay contest and the Art as History Contest. Over 200 students in 6 schools have participated in these positive events.
Grant money has also made it possible to provide youth activities at events such as Discover Amherst, D District Community Day and the Celtic Festival. To date Grants totaling $2300 have been awarded to the Black Rock History Museum.
2015
Ronald McDonald House Charities of W.N.Y., Inc. awarded the Black Rock Historical Society (BRHS) with a $1,500.00 grant.
This grant is being awarded to purchase art supplies and printing costs for the Black Rock Historical Society’s “Art as History Program.”
The grant also allows the BRHS to implement a new Art as History Contest
Students from the North Park Academy are given the opportunity to use their creativity to interpret history in the community through posters and small displays. The topics the students choose from are Unity Island, Fishing in Lake Erie, Scajaquada Creek, the Black Rock Lock and community Gardens. The Goal of this contest is to foster a sense of pride in the community through history and show the significance of Black Rock/ Riverside.
All students will receive a certificate of community service from the Black Rock Historical Society and the West Side Youth Development Coalition who are sponsors of the contest.
The future goals of this project is to acquire more grants and funding to bring the Art as History Program to other schools in the coming years
The contest will end on January 17th 2016 and the reception will be held at the Black Rock Historical Society from 2 to 4 p.m. contest winners will be announced prior to the show
The Black Rock Riverside Alliance received a NYS Parks Grant with special thanks to Robin Schimminger for assisting in acquiring the award.
This grant will be used on BRRAlliance, Inc. operations, the Black Rock Historical Society photo project, the Community Garden’s Junior Gardener Program, and towards community support (ex. Business group meetings.)
With approval through Assembly Ways and Means Committee along with other committees, such as Recreation and Historic preservation and Mr. Schimmingers staff are helping to finalize the approval.
